VOICE RECOGNITION

Voice-recognition software allows you to speak to your computer instead of using the keyboard and mouse. Many RSI sufferers have been able to make use of this technology to carry on with their work, when to do so would otherwise have been impossible.

You may be able to get a VR package under the PACT scheme, if you meet the criteria. Contact the Disability Employment Advisor at your local JobCentre for further information.

Here are some sources of information on VR:

  • voice-users mailing list (about voice recognition software)

To subscribe, send email to [email protected] with "Subscribe" as the subject line. Don't include the quotation marks.

  • VoiceGroup mailing list (voice-software/hardware discussion)

To subscribe, send email to [email protected]

  • ddlinux mailing list

"All interested in speech recognition software under Linux are invited to join this new mailing list. The emphasis is on (though discussion is not limited to) finding a means of porting preexisting applications (especially DragonDictate-style ones, or possibly NaturallySpeaking-style) to Linux, rather than developing one from scratch."

To subscribe, send email to [email protected] with the word "subscribe" in the body of the message.

  • Dragon Systems User Forum

  • viavoice mailing list (IBM voice software)

To subscribe, send email to [email protected]

  • medspeech mailing list (mainly, but not only, about using voice software in medical work)

To subscribe, send email to [email protected]

  • Susan Fulton: Computing Out Loud

Susan Fulton is an experienced user of voice-recognition software. This is how she describes "Computing Out Loud":

"This site is intended to help people using speech recognition software for Windows, whatever the variety, and to do so without the filters of vendors. We have our own filters, of course, so please read critically and send email if you like."

  • http://brightok.net/~edrose/page9.html (A VR user's help guide)

  • a2x users mailing list

This mailing list is run by Simon Crosby, who describes it thus:

"a2x is a piece of public domain software designed to interface any speech recognition system on a PC to a workstation running the X window system, and control the workstation's graphical display and applications. The list is low traffic, and carries information/hints for use of a2x only, not general speech recognition discussion. The list is unmoderated."

To subscribe, send a request to [email protected]. Subscription is not automated, so don't expect an immediate response.
